Dog Bylaw Information
Some of the key Dog Control Bylaw requirements are as follows:
- All dogs to be leashed in public, unless in a designated dog exercise area
- Dogs are not allowed in any area prohibited to dogs.
- Dogs to be kept in a weather-proof shelter/kennel that is kept dry and clean and is of sufficient size to allow the dog to stand up and move about freely.
- Dogs to have access to clean water on the owner’s property at all times.
- Owners are to immediately remove all faeces left by their dog in any public place.
- A restriction to two dogs being kept on any urban property (or on any property less than 1 hectare in size), unless the owner has a permit to keep more, and a maximum of five dogs on any rural property (over 1 hectare in size)
The Policy on the Control of Dogs endeavours to balance the needs of dogs and their owners, while minimising any potential danger, distress and nuisance to the community. In light of this, we have designated a number of areas in the district that can be used as dog exercise areas (where dogs can be exercised freely off the leash) and other areas that are prohibited to dogs Council also provides “Doggy –Do” bins in each of the designated exercise areas.
