Leaves Collection

Waipa Urban areas are planted with many specimen street trees which enhance the environment and landscapes of the towns. The change of seasons between Autumn and Winter bring with it a significant leaf fall. Council has in place a cyclic collection targeting these heavy fall areas either on a weekly (Cambridge) or fortnightly (Te Awamutu and Kihikihi) leave clearance programme in May-July annually.

Leaf clearance in streets is from boundary to boundary. It is a permitted activity for property owners in designated streets to place leaves onto the grass berm or carriageway for the contractor to collect. Wet weather can affect the collection because wet leaves reduce the capacity of the collection machinery. In the event of wet weather, collections will continue, but the work could be delayed.

Click on the town maps below to see if your street is in the collection area.

Cambridge
Kihikihi
Te Awamutu

Other streets with smaller and different tree species generally loose leaves over a three-week period. Streets outside of the designated collection areas that require leaf pick up will be assessed on request as the situation warrants. Please contact our customer support team if your street area needs leaf clearance.

Oak tree leaves make great compost and mulch. Use this around your gardens and shrubs which helps keep weeds down, provides nutrients, warms the soil and retains moisture.

Remember also that burning leaves is not environmental or neighbour friendly. The Urban Fire Bylaw prevents this activity without a permit being issued from the Fire officers.
