If you are planning a party or undertaking something noisy or out of the ordinary, there are noise rules you need to know.
Its an offence to create noise that is excessive, or unreasonable, at anytime of the day or night - that is noise that unreasonably interferes with a persons peace comfort or convenience. Generally speaking, if noise can be heard at the boundary of your property, then its wise to assume that other neighbours can hear it too. The law allows people to complain about noise at any time, and people can be fined or have equipment seized if they make excessive noise. To limit your chances of having enforcement officers visit your house, include neighbours in your plans. Let them know what's happening, and be realistic about times. Assess the noise regularly, and pay particular attention to stereo bass as it can often be heard some distance away. In the event a complaint is received, enforcement officers have to attend. Listen to what they have to say and take any action accordingly.
Any noise queries or complaints can be made on 0800 924 723 24-hours a day. For further information contact Waipa District Council info@waipadc.govt.nz or phone 0800 924 723.
