General Questions

Who will get kerbside recycling?

If you live in for Cambridge, Te Awamutu, Kihikihi, Pirongia, Ohaupo, Ngahinapouri, Rukuhia and Karapiro you will get a weekly kerbside recycling service. If you live in the rural areas of the Waipa District, you will get access to a fortnightly kerbside collection. To find out when your collection day will be, click here.

I manage a retirement village. Will each home get a recycling bin?

Each rateable property in the Waipa District is eligible for a recycling bin and will receive the recycling service.

When will I receive my bin?

All rural properties will receive a bin during the week beginning 25 June 2007, with the first collection beginning either on the week beginning 2 July or week beginning 9 July. You will receive information with the bin on when your first collection will be. Alternatively, click here to find out when your collection day is.

Who is eligible to get a recycling bin?

  • All residential properties from 5 March 2007
  • All rural properties from 2 July 2007

Who is not eligible to get a recycling bin?

At present the kerbside recycling service is for households only. Council is considering whether the service could be extended to businesses and other activities in the district. Businesses, clubs and the like can take small quantities of recyclables to the Transfer Stations in Cambridge and Te Awamutu. For large quantities please contact Streetsmart who may be able to offer a regular service to meet your needs.

How will kerbside recycling work?

You will get a specially marked blue 55 litre recycling bin to put your recyclables into. On your nominated day put the bin out on the kerbside (residential areas) or on the roadside, preferably beside your letterbox if it is visible from the road (rural areas) by 7.00am. Our recycling contractors will empty the contents of the bin and leave the empty bin at the kerbside / roadside or letter box if in the rural area, for you to take indoors and start filling again.

I live in the rural area, and the road I live on is too narrow for the recycling truck to access. What do I do?

If the road you live on in the rural area is too narrow for the recycling truck to access, on your nominated collection day drop your bins off on the corner of your street, and Streetsmart will collect from there.

I have not received a bin. What should I do?

If any rural property has not received a blue bin by Monday 2 July, please contact 08004RECYCLE (0800 473 292). Give your name and address to the Recycling Support Officer who will ask Streetsmart to deliver a bin to you.

My bin has gone missing or has been stolen. What should I do?

Replacement bins are available from the Council offices at a cost of $15 per bin. We also ask you to report the stolen bin to the Police.

Will I keep my recycling bin forever?

The recycling bin belongs to your property! If you leave that property, please leave the bin for the next resident to use. There is a place on the bin to write your property address if it is not already on it.

When will I be able to start using the bin?

You will be able to use the bin as soon as you receive it. Put it out on the kerbside (urban areas) or roadside, or next to the letterbox if it can be seen from the road (rural areas) on your next collection day.

I will be on holiday the week bins are delivered. What arrangements can I make to get my bin?

The contractors will put the bin inside the gate or over the fence where it should be safe. However, you may want to arrange with a neighbour to take care of it until you return.

How will I know how and what to recycle?

A recycling guide has been delivered with every new bin. It will tell you what you can and cannot recycle and how to do it.

What can I recycle?

  • Whole glass bottles and jars – remove the lids (no broken glass)
  • Aluminium and tin cans
  • Empty aerosol containers
  • Clean aluminium foil (plates etc.)
  • Clean plastic bottles/containers from the bathroom, kitchen or laundry with a number in a triangle on or near the bottom – squeezed flat and with the tops on
  • Clean paper and cardboard

What can't be recycled?

  • Window or blue glass and any broken glass
  • Light bulbs, cups and mirrors
  • Any type of polystyrene (including meat trays)
  • Plastic bags/wrapping and other plastic without a recycle symbol
  • Containers that have contained oil, fuel, poisons or paint
  • Organic (garden and kitchen) waste
  • Waxed or plastic coated paper/cardboard, such as the tetra-pak drinking cartons

Streetsmart will sticker any item that is not recyclable and leave them in the bin.

Will I need to sort the things that I recycle?

No. Everything goes into the bin together except for paper/cardboard, which should be tied in a bundle or placed in a cardboard box beside the bin. We recommend that you put the lighter things e.g. flattened plastic bottles, at the bottom of the bin to prevent them from blowing around.

What if I have too much for one bin?

The recycling collectors will only pick up what is inside the bin, (excluding bundled / tied paper). Please do not overfill your bin. Rather, save it for the next collection or take it to the transfer station.

I have seen people taking items from recycling bins. Is this allowed?

No. Strictly speaking that is theft. Please notify the Council if you see anybody tampering with the recycling bins.

How will I be charged for the recycling service?

The cost of the service will be recovered from the rates that each  household pay. This is called a targeted rate. The rate for the 2007/2008 period is $48 per household.

I do not recycle and do not want the recycling charge added to my rates. What can I do?

The recycling service is only possible if every household (rate payer) in the Waipa District contributes and the service will be available to every household. This also encourages Waipa residents to be environmentally conscious and reduce the refuse going to the land fill.

When will we know how much it will cost annually for this service?

The estimated future annual charges are shown in the 10-year Plan (the Long Term Council Community Plan or LTCCP), which is available for download from the Councils' website or can be read at the Council's offices. Any changes in these charges will be signalled in the draft Annual Plan and subject to public consultation. The draft Annual Plan or confirmed Annual Plan can be viewed on the website.

I’ve just moved into a newly built home. Who do I contact to get a bin and start recycling?

Contact the 08004RECYCLE (0800 473 292) and we will instruct the contractor to start collecting from your new property straight away. Recycling bins can be collected from the Council offices. Please bring your rating information or property details with you.
