Urban Fire Control

Local authorities have a statutory responsibility to improve, protect and promote public health. As part of this responsibility, the towns of Te Awamutu, Cambridge, Kihkihi and a number of rural settlements are designated as “urban” by the Waipa District Fire Control Bylaw 2007.

This bylaw controls fires within these areas to ensure no nuisance is caused to other people. Only barbeques (BBQ’s), traditional cooking fires, and fires with a permit issued by Waipa District Council are permitted within the urban areas. These restrictions apply all year round. In extreme conditions, a district-wide fire ban may be implemented. This will result in Waipa District Council suspending the issue of permits.

For further information and rural fire restriction please contact Waipa District Council on info@waipadc.govt.nz or telephone 0800 924 723.
