Gambling policies review
In 2004, as a requirement of the Gambling Act 2003 and the Racing Act 2003, all local authorities adopted a policy about gambling "pokie" machines and stand alone TAB outlets in their districts. Every three years these policies must be reviewed and Waipa District Council have begun a review of the district's two gambling policies - Waipa District Class 4 Gambling Venue Policy and Waipa District Board Venue Policy.
The existing policy regarding class 4 gambling venues (venues where gambling machines are accessible) outlines controls regarding the maximum number of gambling machines within the district, the number of machines per venue and where the venues may be established. There are different approaches to managing the number of machines and the current policy links that number to the district's population.
The policy regarding board venues (venues where you can place a TAB bet) is designed to ensure council and the community has influence over the location of new board venues and to control the growth of gambling within the scope of the Act, while allowing those who wish to participate in sports or racing gambling to do so within the district.
The high level timeframes for this review are:
- Preliminary consultation closes 20 November 2009
- Draft policies prepared by the end of January 2010
- Consultation on the draft policies mid-February to mid-March
- Adoption of new policies by 30 April 2010
