Working at Waipa

Home of Champions – Our Workplace

Hutia te rito o te harakeke
Kei whea te tauranga o te kómako e ko?
Ki mai koe, ki ahau
He aha te mea nui o ténei ao?
Máku e ki atu
He tangata, He tangata, He tangata

If you remove the heart of the flax
Where will the bellbird then rest?
If you should ask me
What is the main thing in this world?
I will say to you
It is people, it is people, it is people

Waipa District Council is an organisation based upon people - our community, our public and our staff. Our success is measured by these people and as an employer, as well as a Council, we want to be regarded as one of the best. After all, our vision is the Home of Champions.

As an employee you will join a winning, friendly, supportive and progressive team. The environment is diverse and complex, the work is challenging and rewarding. There are plenty of opportunities for personal growth and development, reward and recognition and, of course, fun. Our strength as an employer has grown from our shared values that underpin and signify the way we do things at Waipa District Council and help us to live up to our inspiring vision:

Our Values

We have a can-do attitude and own what we do
Are honest, act with integrity and care for our people
Inspire people to exceed expectations
Pursue excellence in all we do
And we have fun and celebrate success

What better way to explain why working here is special than to provide quotes direct from the people who work here (these limericks were developed as part of Vision & Values workshops held with all staff):

There once was a district called Waipa
Fantastic Views where you are
Home of Champions it grew
Ever-Swindell twins are two
Best place to work by far

Waipa’s the district we live in
Mountains, lakes, reserves we have been given
Our sporting Olympians always achieve
We’re behind them, in them we believe
A fantastic community to live, work and play in

Waipa District is such fun
There’s many golds that we have won
Cyclists, Rowers, Athletes, Horses
Have you checked our great golf courses?
Mountains, lakes and rivers galore
Many people still wanting more
We have had success in many ways
Exceeding expectations all the days

And Finally...

There once was a district called Waipa
Where Champions would come near and far
To live, work and play, each and every day
And once they were there they did stay
The parks, the mountains and lakes
The museums and libraries all make
Waipa the best place to be
So why don’t you all come and see?

Our People

Our people occupy a wide and diverse range of roles within Council and as such it follows that they are also from all walks of life, experience, nationality and backgrounds. This makes for an enjoyable and interesting work environment, especially when teams work together.

We truly believe that the workplace should be fun as well as challenging and so we encourage our staff to celebrate their success, all in the name of good teamwork.

Our annual Quiz Night is hugely popular and is a great way of showing your manager that you know more than they do!

Movember time is becoming legendary when our male employees can pretend to be Magnum PI for a few weeks in order to raise money for a good cause.

We have an active Social Committee who organise frequent events for staff, such as family activities hosted at one of our glorious parks or reserves or tours of the finest wineries in the district!

There is a real community feel to our workforce. They enjoy helping and supporting others and regularly volunteer for charitable events such as the Relay for Life (The Cancer Society). Every member of staff is given a ‘Community Day’ so that they may spend a day doing something for the community. We also host Workchoice Day, to give students information about careers in Council, as well as offering other educational sessions to local schools and colleges.
