Last Tuesday 18 students - 8 from Te Awamutu College and 10 from Otorohanga College - attended a Work Choice day at Waipa District Council.
Waipa’s program focused on Engineering and Planning, and the integration between the two professions. These key skill areas were chosen as they are difficult to resource. The first session was led by various WDC staff, who talked about their roles, and the many career opportunities offered in the different fields. After lunch the students were taken to key sites, including Lake Te Ko Utu, Saffron Estate and Lake Karapiro Domain to see how plans and designs translated into actual works.
Work Choice Day is held annually, nationwide, and focuses on easing the transition for young people from school to the workplace, enabling them to make informed career decisions. The students can gather knowledge first hand, and talk to people employed in their field of interest.
