The best of the best from across the District were celebrated last night, at Waipa District Council’s Built and Cultural Heritage Awards evening.
Seventeen high quality nominations were received over seven categories, with the following winners announced:
Category
Restoration of a heritage property, vehicle, plant or equipment using the materials, style and craftsmanship sympathetic to the period.
Winner - David & Bess Aston
Restoration and preservation of Cambridge Character buildings
including the iconic 1931 building on the corner of Alpha and Victoria Streets.
Category
Adaptive re-use and/or redesign of a heritage property involving physical changes to an older structure using the materials, styles and craftsmanship sympathetic to the period in order to prolong its history.
Winner - Whim Holdings & Coralie Minneé
Redevelopment and reuse of a category 2 listed building to create the Simply Divine shop in Duke Street Cambridge.
Category
Heritage Education. Talks, interpretation, research or publications that enhance public understanding and appreciation of Waipa’s social or cultural heritage.
Winner - Pirongia Historic Visitor Centre
The Centre offers publications, historic displays, tours of heritage sites in the district and talks on heritage topics, operating from the former St Saviour’s church building in Pirongia.
Category
Public/Community Services. Volunteer involvement and commitment to cultural/social heritage activities that enrich community life in Waipa.
Winner - Mary Hurst
Active in heritage affairs in the district over 24 years including noteworthy research and well informed heritage advocacy. Her research led to the publication of 24 research reports in “Footprints in History”.

Public/Community Services. Volunteer involvement and commitment to cultural/social heritage activities that enrich community life in Waipa.
Winner - Heather Garrett
A knowledgeable advocate for the public recognition of heritage buildings in the Waikato and Waipa districts for many years including lending support to local groups seeking advice on preserving heritage buildings. Heather is an honorary life member of NZHPT and has been involved in numerous other projects of note in Waipa.
Category
Public/Community Services. Volunteer involvement and commitment to cultural/social heritage activities that enrich community life in Waipa.
Winner - Nga Iwi Toopu o Waipa
Establishing a customary model of tangata whenua consultation in Waipa District.
Category
Heritage Tourism. Organisations or individuals who successfully integrate or promote cultural and/or social heritage as the focus of their tourism activity.
Winner - Colin Pinkerton
Development of Iron Park Museum at Te Awamutu featuring a display of beautifully restored heritage farm machinery & equipment.
Category
Traditional tradesperson, professional or volunteer services. People who successfully demonstrate a skilled and specialist application of traditional methods and craftsmanship.
Winner - Pirongia Clydesdales
Fostering the knowledge and skills of traditional horse drawn carriage driving at Pirongia Clydesdales with the focus of keeping heritage alive. They teach others the craft of traditional coachmanship not only in Waipa but around NZ.
SPECIAL COMMUNITY AWARDS
Parish of St Andrew Cambridge
Preservation of the church.
Parawera Marae
Preservation of Tawhiao’s house.
