Art competition celebrate Melbourne Cup success

Local children are being encouraged to help celebrate Waipa district’s Melbourne Cup success in an artistic way.

A school art competition has been initiated by Cambridge Stud in conjunction with Waipa District Council.

The competition is part of celebrations around the visit of the 18-carat gold Emirates Melbourne Cup to Cambridge on October 10. The visit is part of a world tour of nine countries to celebrate the Cup’s 150th anniversary.

Cambridge has been recognised by the Victoria Racing Club for its outstanding Melbourne Cup record and was chosen as the final leg of the New Zealand part of the tour.

In all, the Waipa district boasts 14 Melbourne Cup winners.

The school  art competition has three categories and is open to every primary and intermediate school in the district. Winning schools will receive $1,000 in cash.Schools who place second in their category will receive $500. Prize money has been provided by Cambridge Stud.

Beryl Emery from Cambridge Middle School is coordinating the competition on behalf of Cambridge Stud and the council.

A Melbourne Cup community celebration will be held in Cambridge on Sunday, October 10 during the Cup’s visit to the town.
