Good start to water conservation for Cambridge/Leamington

5 February 2009

Water conservation in Cambridge and Leamington has gotten off to a good start, with savings of 1.9 million litres of water per day achieved in the first 15 days of alternate day sprinkler restrictions.

WDC Engineering Manager John Kerr is pleased with the savings so far, but says they must continue.

“It’s great that the people of Cambridge and Leamington have got in behind this water conservation initiative, because February is really the start of the dry period, and we know that the temperatures are rising.”

There are many easy ways to save water, says Mr Kerr.

“It’s those little things that can make a big difference.  Making sure taps are turned off properly, not leaving water running while shaving or brushing your teeth, fixing leaks, only watering gardens in the evening or first thing in the morning.  People might be surprised how many litres go to waste every day without realising it.”

The alternate day sprinkler restrictions will be continuing for the foreseeable future, but if further savings are required other measures may be introduced.
