Cambridge’s Victoria Square was the battleground for the Waikato-Bay of Plenty regional final of the National Bank Young Farmer contest, held on Saturday May 10.
Whakatane’s Fraser McGougan, Galatea’s Jon Nicholls, Matamata’s Tim van de Molen and Morrinsville’s Andrew Morris competed in a range of activities to take out the regional final – and book a spot in July’s national grand final.
Tasks were broken down into technical, practical and agrisport, plus contestants were required to be interviewed, give a speech and answer a range of questions.
Eventual winner Fraser McGoughan said it was a well organised day with an excellent mix of different events.
“They were challenging but all things I knew how to do and I had no problems. The wool press module was a touch interesting. It was an old one – I have used one before but it was a long time ago,” he laughs.
Fraser has a new Honda CTX200 Bushlander two-wheeled farm bike valued at $5495 and numerous other prizes to show for his efforts and success in Cambridge and will now go on to try his hand for a share of more than $160,000 worth of prizes at the Grand Final in Ashburton.
