Convoy of classics coming to Cambridge

1 October 2010

More than 100 classic and vintage vehicles, including 75 trucks, will be on display at Victoria Square from 4 – 8pm on Wednesday, October 13 when trucking enthusiasts from around New Zealand stop overnight in Cambridge during a two week tour of the North Island.

Alongside the trucks, classic and vintage cars from the Cambridge Hot Rod and Vintage Car clubs will also be on display, as well as a collection of vintage tractors.

Cambridge’s Michelle and Brett Miller have been instrumental in bringing the trucks to Cambridge, along with the Ross brothers, Mike, Tim, Simon and Tony.

Dubbed the North Island Long Lap, Mrs Miller said the tour is named after a similar classic truck convoy around the South Island in 2007 in memory of classic trucking enthusiast Bill Richardson.

Mrs Miller said a truck is “classic” when it is more than 30 years old. She said trucks in the tour date from 1930 to the late 1990s, and feature every make and model from two tonne pickups to 12 tonne monsters, including  Leyland, Mack, International, ERF, Kenworth, Bedford and Comer.

The North Island Long Lap starts in Wellington on October 11, and includes stops in Wanganui, New Plymouth, Cambridge, Auckland, Whangamata, Awakeri, Gisborne, Havelock North and Fielding, before heading back to Wellington.

The tour travels in groups of four or five at a time, leaving every 10 minutes for their next destination.

Waipa District Council was instrumental in encouraging the convoy to stay in the district  overnight and also encouraged the group to  put the trucks on public display.

The tour will pass through Kihikihi at approximately 2.45pm on Wednesday, October 13, before turning right into Golf Road on route to Cambridge. Trucks will start arriving in Cambridge at between 3.15pm and 3.30pm.

On Thursday morning the tour leaves Cambridge at 8am, and stops in at a local business on Hannon Road before travelling towards Morrinsville on route to Auckland via State Highway 27.
