Counting down to Earth Hour

18 March 2009

Show your support for action on climate change, and turn your lights off for an hour on Saturday March 28 at 8.30pm.

Over 800 cities in 80 countries around the world will be taking part, and Waipa District Council is encouraging residents to get on board.  Last week Mayor Alan Livingston met with Earth Hour project director Dairne Poole, Enviroschools representatives and Pekerau Primary School students, and was pleased to hear the enthusiasm for the initiative.

“The visit to Te Awamutu last week highlights the huge increase in awareness and support for this project nationwide.  It is great to see it happening at all levels, and cant help but achieve change.”

Ms Poole is also delighted with the national response.

“From the councils I have been talking to, it feels like a groundswell of enthusiasm is building across the country.  Earth Hour is a community event and we are urging all New Zealanders to join in and turn off your lights and unnecessary appliances on Saturday 28 March at 8.30pm for one hour,” she says.
