Cycleway under construction

August 16 2010

Physical construction of  the Cambridge to Karapiro shared cycleway/walkway began this week with completion set for mid-October.

The five kilometre concrete track will stretch from Carlyle Street  in Cambridge to the Mighty River Domain at Lake Karapiro.     The track will eventually form part of  ‘Te Awa – the Great New Zealand River Ride’ stretching from Ngaruawahia to Horahora.

Most of the shared cycle and walkway will be three metres wide.  Over the Crows Nest Hill section, a 2.5 metre wide boardwalk will be built, offering spectacular views of the Karapiro dam.

Council’s group manager, service delivery Barry Bergin said iwi groups,  residents and property owners along Maungatautari Road had been “extremely supportive” of the project.

“The assistance from neighbours and those likely to be most affected during construction has been terrific.”

Mr Bergin said temporary traffic signs would be in place for around six weeks while construction was ongoing.

Council has earmarked a  maximum of $495,000 for  the cycleway.  This is approximately one-third of the total expected cost.

The bulk of the total cost is  covered by The Brian Perry Charitable Trust which has agreed to secure up to $990,000 towards the project.  Cambridge Rotary and Transpower have also indicated they will support the project.

The contract for the physical works has been let to  Downer McFalls.
