Dog neglect distressing for Council staff

20 July 2009

While most owners take excellent care of their pets, Waipa District Council’s animal control staff have been dismayed at some recent cases of dogs coming into the pounds suffering from long term neglect.

Council’s Environmental Safety Manager Jennie McFarlane says all owners need to be able to provide the basic requirements that a dog needs to be healthy and happy.

“The Dog Control Act 1996 specifies adequate food, water, shelter and exercise, and Council’s Dog Control Bylaw requires kennels be weather proof, an appropriate size and kept clean and sanitary at all times.   If you observe any welfare issues or need advice, please contact the SPCA or Council.”

Mrs McFarlane also has some tips for new owners to remember, including providing adequate shelter from weather (wet, cold, heat etc), if kept outdoors, allowing the dog access to sun in winter time and shade in summer time, feeding a quality diet that is specifically prepared for dogs, treating regularly for worms and fleas and following veterinary advice in terms of vaccinations and general health maintenance, plus seeking immediate assistance if your dog is unwell.

“We enjoy working with our residents to ensure the dogs in the District are well looked after.  Another way residents can help is through puppy fostering – if you can look after a pup or special needs dog for up to 10 days, we’d love to hear from you.  We provide all the food and bedding, all you need to have is a fenced property and a love for dogs.”

Any queries about dog control or fostering can be directed to Waipa District Council’s animal control team on 0800 924 723.
