Dogs on loose in Kihikihi

August 3 2010

Waipa District Council’s dog control officers are urging people to be on the look out for roaming  dogs responsible for killing five sheep in Kihikihi on Monday night.

The sheep, one which had been a family pet for 11 years, were mauled to death on a property in Haultain Street.  A passerby discovered them dead on Tuesday morning and called council staff.

Dog control officers, accompanied by local police, visited properties in Kihikihi today (Tuesday, August 3) and impounded two dogs – a beardie cross and a Sharpei.

Council staff are talking with the owners of both dogs.   Neither dog is registered.

Evidence shows the Sharpei was clearly involved in the incident.  However, dog control staff believe at least one other dog may also have been  involved and are urging members of the public to be alert and report any roaming dogs.

Environmental services team leader Karl Tutty said farmers should also be mindful of the issue.

“The last thing we want is more attacks like this, or worse,” Mr Tutty said.

The last incident of a similar nature in Kihikihi was 18 months ago.
