Free family concert from American Idol finalist

15 October 2010

Waipa residents and international visitors will be entertained by international artists at a spectacular free family music concert at Victoria Square in Cambridge on Monday, November 1.

Utah-based musician Justin Williams will perform in Cambridge as part of his New Zealand tour.

Williams, 28, was recently a contestant on the well-known television programme American Idol. He captured the heart of the programme’s audience when he revealed his battle with cancer when he was 20-years-old.

While he didn’t make the programme’s top 24 contestants, his easy listening music style and talent led to a contract with a Los-Angeles based music label. He has been enjoying a successful music career including performing in off-Broadway musicals, and  touring and working with Yoko Ono on a charity peace project for the Children’s Hope Foundation.

Justin will be joined by local entertainers including Waipa’s 2010 National Country Music Award winners Michael Tipping and Ashley Cooper plus the Walmsley family, Jessie Hughes and others.

Waipa District Council staff convinced Williams to add Cambridge to his itinerary, and perform for free as part of celebrations around the rowing world championships which start on October 31.

All artists are performing free with some funding  provided by Council through a Regional Working Group set up to leverage maximum benefit from the championships.

The concert begins at 6.30pm.
