Geotechnical issues sees contract concluded

4 September 2009

Despite significant geotechnical testing prior to the stormwater pipe works starting that indicated Lindsay Park was the best location, ongoing ground problems and the possibility of instability has disrupted proceedings to the point where Waipa District Council and Smythe’s Contractors have mutually agreed to conclude the current contract.

Waipa DC’s Group Manager Engineering Service Delivery John Kerr says Council is extremely disappointed the cutting edge ‘trenchless technology’ hasn’t been allowed to be completed in this particular location.

“Both parties are disappointed. as the trenchless technology option meant the impact on the environment was minimal, it was very safe and cost effective.  But it became apparent as works progressed that the ground wasn’t as robust as it seemed, tomos were appearing and revealing other possible risks that meant it just wasn’t practical to continue”.

Council engineers are now investigating alternative options for the pipe, which is  integral to eliminating surface flooding in the area and managing future capacity needs due to growth.

“We are currently working on new design and location options and are anticipating construction to occur prior to April 2010.  We are still within budget for the stormwater works, so while having to go down another track is frustrating, there will be no extra financial impact on ratepayers.”

Works to reinstate the site, including removal of the pipes, fencing and resowing of grass will happen in the next few weeks.
