Following consultation with residents and businesses adjacent to the fruiting ginkgo trees on Alexandra St, the female (fruiting) trees have been programmed for removal.
Waipa District Council’s tree policy states that trees may be considered for removal if they cause hardship. Council Communications Advisor Nicki Davidson said the nuisance caused by the falling fruit meant that it was appropriate for Council to act.
“When the fruit falls, it splatters onto the footpath and releases a terrible smell. It then gets embedded in people’s shoes and is walked into businesses and houses.”
The male (non fruiting) trees are not being removed.
Weather permitting, the trees have been scheduled for removal on Thursday 1 November. The five trees being removed will be replaced with flowering cherry trees.
Engineering works are also planned for this section of Alexandra Street. The water main is to be replaced and upgraded, and remedial work is being programmed for the footpath and cycle lane, the road berm is to be contoured and vehicle entry crossings will be renewed where necessary. This work will be undertaken through into the new year.
