Planning for a design concept and capital works programme to upgrade and improve Te Awamutu’s town centre is well underway, but Council needs your assistance!
This is a major project, which will see the design confirmed in mid-2008 and upgrade works commence soon after, so we need to get it right. The design and works programme will coordinate Council development projects for at least the next 10 years.
Council is aware of the many issues and ideas raised by residents and business operators, and these will be considered as part of the design development process. Community feedback is vital to ensure all of the relevant issues, concerns and ideas are considered now – at the planning stage. The project focuses on the area bounded Alexandra, Sloane, Arawata and Mutu Streets, as shown in the picture below:
A number of development proposals including:
• A new library and/or museum
• A Walk of Fame
• A playground near the Te Awamutu Events Centre
• An outdoor swimming pool
• The restored Climax steam engine
will be looked at, along with the consideration of other issues previously raised by the community. These include:
• Town gateways
• Modernising Alexandra Street
• Managing heavy traffic in Alexandra Street
• Improving pedestrian safety and connections
• Parking
• Better access links from Alexandra Street to other areas of the town centre
