Planning for a design concept package to upgrade and improve Te Awamutu’s central business district is well underway.
Consultants Gray Matter are collating a range of information to assist in putting together concept drawings. The proposed area that the upgrade will cover is shown in the picture, with particular focus on the area of Alexandra, Sloane, Arawata and Mutu Streets.

Currently, there are a number of development proposals for the area, including a new library and/or museum, a Walk of Fame, a playground near the Te Awamutu Events Centre, and the restored Climax steam engine. These proposals, along with consideration of uniquely Te Awamutu themes will be included in the design concept process.
Other issues previously raised by the community, including gateways to the town, modernising Alexandra St, improving pedestrian safety and connections, managing heavy traffic in Alexandra St, parking, better access links between Alexandra St and other areas, and a wider range of stores will also be considered.
Once Council has received feedback from the community, a concept plan including projects, themes, budgets and priorities will be completed for formal consultation in April.
At this stage the project steering group, chaired by Cr Michael Cox, and comprising of Cr Hazel Barnes, Cr Graham Jull, Cr Laurie Hoverd and Cr George Simmons is looking for feedback on the “Heart of Te Awamutu”, including your likes and dislikes, what should be retained/removed and ideas on a potential “new look” for the area.
Cr Cox looks forward to receiving a range of ideas and suggestions for the town centre.
“This is a unique opportunity for every resident of Te Awamutu to have their say. Don’t let this chance pass!”
Ideas and suggestions put forward by the people of Te Awamutu will be considered by the steering group, and there will be an opportunity to talk with them about your comments on February 29.
