September 10 2010
Waipa voters will be able to cast their votes in the 2010 local government elections from next week with voting papers being mailed this Friday (September 17).
From Monday, September 20, 31,739 voters will start receiving their voting papers, with all papers expected to be delivered by Wednesday, September 22. People who have not received their voting papers by then should contact Waipa District Council.
The voting papers will use both the First Past the Post (FPP) voting and Single Transferable Voting (STV) systems. Voting papers will contain clear instructions on how to vote using both systems. The FPP voting papers will have a light grey background screen while the STV voting papers will have a light orange wash screen.
“People should read their papers carefully before casting their vote to make sure they are using the right voting method,” Waipa’s deputy electoral officer Jennie McFarlane said.
While 97 per cent of eligible Waipa voters have enrolled to vote, approximately 1761 eligible voters have not.
“Although electoral rolls have now closed, people can still enrol to vote. However, they will need to request special voting papers,” Mrs McFarlane said.
“The last date to enrol is Friday, October 8. I would encourage anyone who has not yet registered to do so, and cast a special vote. It’s your opportunity to have a say on how the District is run over the next three years.”
Enrolment forms and information are available from www.elections.org.nz or local Postshops.
