Waipa’s latest asset will be back in the spotlight early next month as locals are invited to tour the newly opened Lake Karapiro events and community centre.
Waipa District Council has invited all Waipa residents to tour the Don Rowlands Centre and wander the revitalised Mighty River Domain on the afternoon of Saturday, July 3. Posters urging people to “see it before the world does” have gone up around the district.
Site manager Liz Stolwyk said the intention was to give locals a chance to “have a good look” at their facility before activities for the world rowing championship ramped up and access to the site became more difficult. The centre was officially opened by the Governor-General the Hon Sir Anand Satyanand on June 1.
“The new facility has been described as a ‘jewel in Waipa’s crown’ and that’s absolutely right,” Ms Stolwyk said.
“We’re getting huge interest from groups interested in hiring the centre so now’s a good chance for people to have a look through.”
Centre staff would offer guided tours and a number of groups who regularly use the lake would be helping to create a fun afternoon of activities, she said.
“It’s a low-key, fun opportunity for people to visit the centre and appreciate what an asset the district has, not just with the centre but with the whole Mighty River Domain.”
The centre will be open from on Saturday, July 3 from 1pm – 3pm with parking off Maungatautari Road. Email enquiries should go to karapiro@xtra.co.nz.
