Keeping footpaths tidy takes team effort

5 October 2010

With summer on the way, Waipa residents are being asked to clear and cut back any trees and shrubs on their property that have overgrown onto the district’s footpaths during winter.

Waipa District Council’s manager road corridor Dawn Inglis said Council is asking people to look at their property’s frontage and clear any overgrowth so footpaths are safe, clear and tidy.

“With the warmer weather there’s a lot more people out walking, running and using footpaths generally. Footpaths are something we take for granted – they’ve always been there and we expect them to be there – but everyone has a part to play in keeping them tidy,” Mrs Inglis said.

She said that cuttings and clippings should not be left on the roadside or kerb, and must be removed and disposed of properly.

“As well as blowing around and making more mess, cuttings and clippings left by the roadside will block drains, which could lead to flooding in the event of rain.”

The public should notify Council if they notice any overgrown trees or shrubbery on Council-maintained property.

“Council’s parks and reserves team runs a carefully planned maintenance programme and appreciate the public letting them know of any areas that require additional attention.”
