Loose dogs at lake not acceptable

24 September 2010

People taking dogs to the Lake Ngaroto walking track are being reminded that their dogs must be kept on leads.

Waipa District Council has had a number of recent complaints about dogs running free on the walking track. Environmental services team leader Karl Tutty said two runners had also reported “near misses” after being confronted by dogs on the track with no owners in sight.

“The Lake Ngaroto track is very popular with walkers and runners, but it’s not a dog exercise area, and dogs must be on a lead at all times,” Mr Tutty said.

“It’s not because we don’t want dog owners to enjoy the environment – we do. But it’s a case of having respect for users who don’t expect to see dogs running loose and, in some instances, may be frightened by them. Equally, some dogs don't react well to being confronted by other dogs or people, and owners need to be in control of their dogs.”

“We’re also aware there’s some wonderful bird life at Lake Ngaroto – that’s part of its charm. But birds and dogs just don’t mix.”

Mr Tutty said that if a dog was not on a lead and under the control of its owner, an infringement notice and fine of up to $300 could be issued.

“We don’t want to do that. We’d rather people were aware of the rules and abided by them.”

Mr Tutty said there is a designated dog exercise area in front of the boat club building where owners could let their dogs loose under supervision. Signs posted at both ends of the walking track advise dog owners of restrictions around the Lake. However, the signs are often vandalised, forcing Council staff to constantly check and replace them.

Mr Tutty said patrols of the area were likely to increase to ensure dog owners were aware of the rules. Staff would also be encouraging dog owners to pick up free maps from Council offices showing all dog exercise areas in the district.
