Mutu St rehabilitation underway

2 February 2009

Pavement reconstruction on Mutu Street, between Alexandra and Mahoe Streets is now underway.

Works that will be completed include the removal of the existing seal, reshaping of the existing pavement to new levels, injection of bitumen and cement, a waterproof chipseal and then asphalt surfacing.

WDC Engineering Manager John Kerr says some new technology is being used, which dramatically reduces the time, noise and dust nuisance factors.

“Our contractors, Fulton Hogan, have new specialist equipment, one of only two in New Zealand.  This means the job will be completed very quickly, and will last for over 25 years”.

The pavement was reconstructed because the existing surface was requiring high levels of maintenance, and was no longer waterproof or providing adequate traction in wet weather.

Works are expected to be completed by the end of this week, Council would like to thank affected businesses and the community for their patience.
