New bus service tender out

12 January 2010

Tenders for an expanded bus service between Te Awamutu and Hamilton and Cambridge and Hamilton have been called for.

Submissions received during Waipa District Council’s 10-year Plan process indicated residents were supportive of an extended service, so current timetables will be amended to include eight return trips on weekdays between Te Awamutu and Hamilton (with a link to Kihikihi on Tuesdays and Thursdays), and three returns trips on Saturday, Sunday and public holidays.

The service between Cambridge/Leamington and Hamilton will be increased to six and a half return trips each weekday and three return trips on Saturday, Sunday and public holidays.

Council’s Corporate Planning Manager Tracey Hancock says initial public consultation was undertaken in 2008, with further feedback sought last year.

“It’s been a lengthy process to this point so it’s good to now be calling for tenders.
We have been working closely with Environment Waikato, who are responsible for managing public transport in the region, to ensure we provide the most appropriate service for our community.

Tenders will close on February 10, they’ll then be evaluated and, subject to budget, a contract is expected to be awarded for services to start as soon as possible.”  says Ms Hancock.

Fares for the extended service have not been finalised, however it is hoped to keep them in line with current pricing.  Senior citizens will also be able to use their Super Gold Cards on the new service.
