New toilet block for park users

2 December 2010

A new toilet block has been opened at Te Ko Utu Park on Thornton Road (opposite Bowen Street).

It replaces an old toilet block that was overlooking the Thornton Road Bowling Club.

Waipa District Council’s parks and reserves team leader Max Ward said the old toilet block was  badly in need of an upgrade and was positioned in a secluded area, which was not ideal for public safety.

The new toilet block was designed by council staff. It is based on a winning concept from Cambridge High School staff and students that took first prize in a competition last year in which the school designed and built a toilet for Te Awamutu Cemetery.

The Te Ko Utu park toilet block cost $33,000.

”The total cost for its manufacture and installation was around half the price of other commercially available public toilets,” Mr Ward said.

Commercial cleaners are responsible for cleaning all public toilets in and around Cambridge. However Mr Ward said the public shouldn’t hesitate to phone Council’s customer support team if they notice any damage or uncleanliness.

“We really appreciate the public’s assistance to ensure these amenities remain clean and tidy.”

The new toilet block has access for people with disabilities and is situated adjacent to the playground, Liberty Swing and Begonia House.
