Waipa District Council is delighted to announce that this week will see Streetsmart collecting the 2,000th tonne of recyclable materials.
This is an outstanding milestone to be reached by our District, as the recycling service has only been running for 8 months.
To measure in another way, we have recycled two million kilograms of material, which is enough to fill, by weight, about 70 40ft shipping containers.
Residents should be immensely proud of their recycling efforts, and the positive impact that this has had on the environment. Prior to the introduction of the kerbside service, these recyclables would have been sent to the landfill.
Waipa District Mayor, Alan Livingston, is proud to be mayor of a district that values the environment so highly.
“This milestone is an excellent achievement, and reflects our district’s total buy-in to the need for, and the benefits of, recycling.
Community consultation highlighted the public support for kerbside recycling, the contractor is providing an efficient service, and the results have exceeded all expectations. Well done and thank you to the community and all associated with the scheme.”
This milestone comes at a time when another milestone has been reached; the commencement of a kerbside service to the District’s schools and early childhood centres.
