Keeping pedestrians safe in the Cambridge CBD is the key driver behind an upcoming joint operation between Waipa District Council and the Cambridge Police.
The test initiative, which will see skateboards and bikes ridden on footpaths in a manner which may cause damage or create nuisance being seized by Police or Council enforcement staff, will shortly be underway.
Council Regulatory Manager Wayne Allan says bikes and skateboards being ridden on footpaths in the Central Business District of the town could result in a nuisance or injury to pedestrians.
“The section in the Public Places bylaw about skateboards and bikes not being allowed to ridden on footpaths in the CBD is there to protect public safety. Under the LGA we have the power to confiscate items, so that is what we will be doing, and the owner will have to pay a $20 storage and administration fee before their bike or skateboard is returned to them.”
The areas that skateboards or bikes should not be ridden on the footpath cover the main business areas, including but not limited to Victoria St, Duke St, Alpha St, Wilson St, Hally's Lane, Empire St, Lake St, Kirkwood St, Commerce St, Council car parks at Hally's Lane, Anzac St, Cambridge Town Hall areas and it environs.
Any queries may be directed to council enforcement staff or the Cambridge Police.
