Rural fire restrictions begin December 1

27 November 2009

Restrictions on lighting fires anywhere in the Waipa District begin on December 1st, to remain in place until the end of March 2010, the only exception being if a permit is granted.

Permits are free to obtain, last for a maximum of 7 days, and must be applied for at least two days in advance to allow a site visit if necessary says Rural Fire Officer Chuck Davis.

“If a fire must be lit, then a permit must be applied for.  If you don’t have one and something goes wrong, then you may be without insurance, and liable for the call out costs of the fire service which can be significant depending on the severity of the fire and what needs to be used to put it out.”

Te Awamutu and Cambridge along with Karapiro, Kihikihi, Ngahinapouri, Ohaupo, Pirongia, Rukuhia, Tokanui and Te Pahu have permanent fire restrictions in place, but there are some exemptions for braziers and hangi.

“The introduction of our fire bylaw in 2007 added the smaller centres to ensure consistency and an equal level of safety across the district.  If a fire or smoke is creating a health nuisance then Council has the power to extinguish it, although if it is threatening people or property, be sure to call 111 immediately.  Any other queries, call us.”

Applications for fire permits may be made at either Council office.  A viewable copy of the Rural Fire Plan, and brochures on the Urban Fire Bylaw are also available.
