Shakespeare St crossing to be reinstalled

Waipa District Council has decided to reinstall the zebra crossing at its previous Shakespeare Street location.

Several engineering surveys indicated that this crossing was not being fully used by pedestrians and many people were crossing at other points along the existing road, so when the Leamington road works were being completed last year the decision was made to install a crossing point with a refuge island instead of a zebra crossing.

However, concerns have been expressed about the lack of a formal crossing, especially to assist elderly users.

Council Chief Executive Garry Dyet says the safety of pedestrians is paramount.

“At the end of the day, we want our people to feel and be safe.  If reinstalling the zebra crossing will achieve that, then we’ll do it, and we strongly recommend that pedestrians take advantage of the formal crossing point.”

It is expected that reinstallation of the zebra crossing will occur in the next month.
