Significant response to draft district plan

16 December 2010

More than 400 Waipa residents have provided feedback on an informal version of the Waipa District Plan.

Waipa District Council is reviewing the District Plan and released a draft version in mid-October. Close to 8000 letters were sent to people with properties that could be affected by proposed changes, requesting feedback.

Council’s strategy manager Gary Knighton said the council had received 400 feedback forms and responded to approximately 500 phone calls. Responses had also been received from groups and organisations including neighbouring councils, utility companies and Federated Farmers.

He said the majority of people wanted to discuss what impact the proposed changes might have on their own properties.

“We’re really pleased with the quantity and quality of feedback. A lot of people have taken the time to give us a very extensive and considered response and that’s going to be very helpful as we move towards firming up proposals,” Mr Knighton said.

“People seem to be supportive of identifying significant natural areas. Concerns have been raised about some issues including flood hazard areas and the proposal to increase the minimum size of a section from 400m2 to 500m2.”

Mr Knighton said the council was now working through the feedback and investigating the issues raised.

“Where possible the council is seeking to address the issues in time for the formal notification of the Proposed Plan in mid-2011.”

He added that it’s not too late to provide informal feedback. Anyone who received a letter and would still like to discuss it was welcome to contact the council, he said.
