Stiff competition at Waipa Tri-Nations

25th May 2010

More than 400 year nine and 10  high school students and student coaches will flock to Cambridge High School next week to compete in the annual Waipa ‘Tri-Nations’ tournament.

The tournament involves Cambridge High School, Te Awamutu College and St Peter’s School and was established five years ago to encourage friendly sports competition between schools in the district.  It has now been expanded to include chess, dance, debating and theatre-sports as well as nine sporting codes.  They are basketball, dodgeball, hockey, indoor rowing, netball, soccer, rugby, touch rugby and volley ball.

This year, the event is being supported with a grant from the Ministry of Youth Development and also has continuing support from Waipa District Council and Sport Waikato.  The Waipa Youth Council plays a key role in organising the event.

Waipa District Mayor Alan Livingston said the tournament had been hugely successful in bringing the district’s three secondary schools together.

“It’s an absolute credit to our student leaders who organise and run the day and it reflects well on Waipa as being innovative and successful.  The Tri-Nations is something that other regions can be envious of,” he said.

The tournament begins at 9.30am on June 2 with trophies for winning schools, as well as the School Spirit Award, presented at 1.30pm in the school hall.  Visitors are welcome to attend and watch, but are required to sign in at the school’s main office first.
