Tenders have now been let for two significant Te Awamutu projects due to start in January.
The first is the for the construction of a new rail overbridge on Ngaroto Road, with works including a new straight alignment, widening to two lanes, and provision for a future double track railway line. It is expected to take about four to six months to complete.
John Kerr, Council’s Group Manager Engineering Service Delivery says the new bridge will have a life of about 100 years and replaces the existing very narrow and creaky 1930’s timber bridge. It will remove what has been a major restriction to access and growth for Te Awamutu.
“Local landowners, iwi and the Historic Places Trust have been extremely helpful, meaning that we could move forward with a design that everyone was happy with. Also we would like to thank the New Zealand Transport Agency for assisting with the funding of this key community project.”
The second is the Alexandra Street upgrade as part of the Heart of Te Awamutu project. Through a pre-qualifying process five contractors have been invited to bid for the work, which will include 800 metres of new water mains, 200 metres of new stormwater pipes, five improved pedestrian crossings, improved pedestrian ramps, new streetlighting, new seating, bins and handrails, new gardens and the removal of seven trees to be replaced by a more suitable species.
“We are very excited to see this project underway, as it will really update the streetscape and remove some of the problems like tree roots interfering with underground pipes and footpaths. We expect that the changes planned will really open up the street to create a simple and uncluttered look. This project will take about six months to complete once construction starts towards the end of January, so we are working with businesses in the main street to ensure disruptions will be minimised as much as possible.”
Both tenders close on December 17.
