Waipa DC now a registered building consent authority

Waipa District Council is now a registered building consent authority under the Building Act 2004.

Council’s Building Control Manager Gary Boys was very pleased to be presented with the registration certificate by the Chief Executive of the Department of Building and Housing, Katrina Bach in Wellington last week.

“Its been a huge task, we have been working on this for two years to create a manual on all our policies and procedures.  However the new regulations mean better records and better consistency in the way we carry out our work.”

Waipa DC was the 49th Council out of 76 to become registered, with 55 councils now accredited and registered nationwide.

The Building Consent Authority Accreditation and Registration Scheme was one of many reforms introduced in the revised Building Act of 2004, and aims to ensure buildings are built right first time.  It focuses on strengthening the consent processing, inspection and approval stages of the building process.

Stage one is now in place, with stage two the implementation of a quality management system by 2010, and stage three a requirement for all staff to have a building control qualification by 2013.
