Thirty events, ranging from hydroplane racing to brass band competition, have been given financial assistance from Waipa District Council.
Members of the District Promotions Fund Committee (Mayor Alan Livingston, Deputy Mayor Peter Lee and Policy Committee chairman Graham Jull) have allocated most of the money from the $100,000 fund set up to encourage organisers to stage events in the district.
There were 43 applications to the fund, five more than last year. In total, $218,575 was sought by event organisers.
Events supported by the fund begin this month with the New Zealand national gymsports championships to be held at Mystery Creek. More than 750 competitors will compete at the four-day event with up to 20,000 spectators expected. New Zealand’s Commonwealth Games’ gymnastics team will be selected from the championships.
Meanwhile, applications for the council’s community board discretionary grants closed on August 31. Groups have applied for nearly $240,000 despite only $75,000 being available. Money will be allocated by community boards later this month.
