Water needed to save Alexandra Street’s lawns

23 November 2010

Lawns in Alexandra Street planted in the “Heart of Te Awamutu” main street upgrade are suffering from the effects of dry weather.

With summer water restrictions in place, Waipa District Council has engaged a private contractor with an existing resource consent for water use to save the lawns.

The contractor will take water from his own farm supply – not the town’s supply –  to water the lawns in the hope they will not have to be replanted.

Watering is being done very early in the morning, three times a week.

Waipa District Council’s manager water services Bob Shaw said Council is was aware that some customers are concerned about sprinklers being used by Council parks staff. He reiterated that no town supply water would be used to save the Alexandra Street lawns.

He said Council parks staff were also working to minimise the use of sprinklers, without compromising ratepayer investment already made in the gardens.

“Our challenge is to find a balance between what looks attractive and what's appropriate, particularly in hot weather, and particular when a water saving regime is in place.”
