World Environment Day in the Waipa District

Waipa District’s Lake Serpentine will be the place to be this year, to celebrate  World Environment Day.

A family day at the lake, including canoeing, tours of the reserve, a barbeque lunch and talks from a range of experts has been organised by Waipa District Council for Saturday June 7, from 9am until 2pm.

Waipa DC’s Heritage Development Manager Tony Roxburgh says the family day will be a great way to highlight the district’s valuable natural heritage sites.

“These places are interesting, they are an essential part of our landscape and what better place to show this off than at Lake Serpentine”.

“We will have experts talking about the Lake’s unique animal and plant life along with information on the management of natural sites within our agricultural landscape, including animal pest control. Forest Flora Nurseries will also be there to offer advice on what trees to plant where.”  he says.

Lake Serpentine Reserve is jointly managed by Waipa District Council and Department of Conservation (DOC).  It is also a priority lake for restoration management as determined by Waipa Peat Lake Accord members, being Environment Waikato, DOC, Waipa DC, Auckland/Waikato Fish and Game and Nga Iwi Toopu O Waipa

Lake Serpentine is next to SH 3, 8 km north of Te Awamutu.
