Young champions honoured at youth awards

2 July 2010

Thirty nine young people from the Waipa district were acknowledged in an awards ceremony last night (Thursday, 01 July) for outstanding achievements in academics, arts and culture, community service, leadership and sport.

Waipa District Deputy Mayor Peter Lee and award sponsors presented recipients with excellence, merit or achievement awards in nominated categories.

Benefits of winning a youth award include improving future academic and scholarship opportunities and receiving cash prizes for Excellence (up to $300) and Merit (up to $200).

Run annually by the Waipa Youth Council, the award is in its eighth year. It is open to young people aged 14 – 18 who reside, or attended school for at least six months in the award year, in the Waipa district.

Nominations for Youth Awards have nearly doubled since the inaugural Awards in 2003 which attracted 53 nominations. This year 94 nominations were received.

Each category was judged by two independent category experts. Judges reside in the Waipa district.

The award’s evening is hosted on alternative years by the district’s three secondary schools: Cambridge High School, St Peter’s School and Te Awamutu College. Te Awamutu College hosted the 2010 ceremony.  Students play a key role in organising and managing the award’s ceremony.

Former Te Awamutu College student and children’s television personality (What Now) Charlie Panapa was guest speaker and entertainer at the awards ceremony. His performance was filmed by the What Now production team, and there is a possibility it will appear in the What Now show in the near future.

Sponsors provided the Excellence and Merit award cash prizes. This year’s sponsors were:
Academic: Kihikihi Rotary
Arts & Culture: Edge Radio
Community Service: Te Awamutu Rotary
Leadership: Cambridge Rotary
Sport: Hautapu Sports & Recreation Club
Multi-Achiever: Waipa District Council
