Waipa District Council’s Governance Statement is a collection of information about the processes that Council uses to engage with the District’s residents. It outlines how Council makes decisions and shows how residents can influence those processes. It also promotes local democracy by providing the public with information on ways they can influence local democratic processes.
Council’s last Governance Statement was prepared in 2004. That version has been reviewed and updated to include the results of the latest local body elections.
Council’s Governance Statement is a requirement of Section 40 of the Local Government Act 2002 (LGA). According to the LGA, the local governance statement is to set out:
The functions, responsibilities and activities of councils
Any local legislation that the council acts under
The electoral system and opportunities to change it
Representation arrangements and the opportunity to change them
Elected members roles and conduct
Governance structures and processes
Meeting processes
Consultation policies and other key council policies
The way elected members make decisions and relate to each other and to the management of council
Systems for public access to the local authority and elected members
Processes for request of official information.
