You will need to be nominated by two people, who sign your nomination form.
Nominators for District or Regional Councils, or for Community Board candidates, can be residential or ratepayer electors but must be electors in the ward or community board that the candidate is standing in.
Candidates cannot nominate themselves for office.
Nomination forms and candidate information packs are available from the Electoral Officer (ph 0800 924 723) and the Council offices in Te Awamutu and Cambridge.
You cannot stand for election to both the Waipa District Council (as Mayor, Councillor or Community Board member) and the Waikato Regional Council (Environment Waikato).
You cannot stand for election to more than one ward or constituency of the same authority.
However, you may stand for the positions of Mayor, Councillor and Community Board member simultaneously, but if elected to more than one position, you are treated as having vacated the lower ranking position.
MAYOR
The Mayor is elected by all the district’s voters.
COUNCIL
For electoral purposes the district is divided into 5 wards that elect a total of 12 councillors (excluding the Mayor). The wards and numbers of councillors elected for each are:
- Cambridge – 4 councillors
- Maungatautari – 1 councillor
- Te Awamutu – 4 councillors
- Kakepuku – 1 councillor
- Pirongia – 2 councillors
COMMUNITY BOARDS
Waipa District has two communities and electors in these communities vote for members to represent them on the respective community board. The communities are Cambridge and Te Awamutu.
Each community board has 5 elected members plus Council will appoint 2 Councillors to each Community Board.
Te Awamutu Community Board
- 4 from the Te Awamutu Ward
- 1 from the Kakepuku Ward
Cambridge Community Board
- 4 from the Cambridge Ward
- 1 from the Maungatautari Ward
