Waipa Heritage

Otawhao Mission Station

The Waipa Heritage Council, an informal committee of Waipa District Council, has been set up to help ensure the conservation and maintenance of our heritage in this area.

It is important that we know the history of our land and those who lived on it, used it, built on it and modified it before our time.

In the Waipa District we have a wide range of natural heritage issues – our bush, lakes, rivers, wetlands and mountains – as well as historic sites and buildings, cultural heritage, museum collections, landscape issues, areas of archaeological importance and, of major significance, a rich diversity of Maori occupation over several centuries.

All of these matters need our consideration, and the Council welcome input from residents in the area, to ensure important Heritage issues are not missed or forgotten. We’d like comment on the stories we run in our newsletters, and additional information where it can add to our knowledge and understanding of the history and development of our Waipa District.
