Local election candidates’ workshops
12 July 2010
If you want to have a say in Waipa's future, council is holding workshops about how you can stand to become a community board member, councillor or mayor.
A workshop for prospective candidates in this year’s local government elections will be held at the Waipa District Council office in Bank Street , Te Awamutu at 6.30pm on Tuesday July 27. Another will be held at the Wilson Street council offices in Cambridge at 6.30pm on Thursday, July 29.
“This is an opportunity for people interested in standing in the 2010 elections to learn more about the nomination and election processes and the role of council and elected members. It’s also a chance to have any questions answered,” Waipa District Council's deputy electoral officer, Jennie McFarlane said.
“Local government is local democracy. This is fundamental for the people of Waipa to have their voices heard. The mayor and councillors take on a leadership role in the Waipa district representing the views of the community.
“We need a range of people of different ages, ethnicities and backgrounds to represent the diversity of Waipa's community.
“Anyone over the age of 18 can stand for election as long as they are a New Zealand citizen and enrolled on the electoral roll.”
Nominations for candidates for the 23 positions available at Waipa District Council open on July 23 2010 and close 12 noon on August 20 2010. Voting papers will be sent out from September 17 2010 and must be mailed to the council by Election Day, October 92010.
