A record 90 nominations have been received for this years Waipa District Youth Awards.
Particularly pleasing was the significant increase in nominations for the community service award said Mayor Alan Livingston.
“I have very much enjoyed reading about the various ways that our youth are trying to make our Waipa community a better place. There are some great stories.”
There are also strong contenders for the other four categories (sports, leadership, arts and culture and academic) plus the multi achiever, meaning the judging panel will have a challenging time picking the overall winners.
“Across the board, the talent, commitment and ability of these young people is just outstanding. I am sure that this level of achievement would be the envy of any other region in New Zealand. Judging will be a difficult task this year.” Mr Livingston said.
The nomination period for this years awards was 1 February 2009 until 31 January 2010, and nominees must have been between the ages of 14-18, and lived or been schooled in the Waipa District for at least six months of this time.
Judging will take place over the next month, with the winners announced at a formal ceremony at Te Awamutu College on July 1st.
