Show your support for action on climate change, and turn your lights off for an hour on Saturday March 27 at 8.30pm.
Globally, 107 countries have signed up, with 47 councils in New Zealand taking part. Iconic buildings around the country including the giant kiwifruit in Te Puke, Chelsea Sugar Factory, Skytower, and the Beehive will all be plunged into darkness to commemorate the event.
Since it began in Sydney in 2007, the campaign has grown to become the largest mass-environmental action in history. In 2009, Earth Hour saw hundreds of millions of people in more than 4,000 cities turn off lights for one hour in a graphic demonstration of support for determined international action on climate change.
Council’s Business Excellence Manager Tracey Hancock encourages all Waipa residents to get involved.
“It is really easy to make a difference. Turn off your lights and non-essential electrical appliances, and consider what else you could do to show your support. The challenge is to think outside the square!”
