District Growth Strategy

The community vision stated in the Growth Strategy is:

Te whakakotahitanga o te iwi o Waipa kia anga whakamua, kia hapai i te taiao.
Uniting the people of Waipa for progress while sustaining the environment.

The Growth Strategy is a plan to manage the growth of the district. The overall aim of the strategy is to take an integrated approach to managing growth.

The main actions of this strategy are to:

  • Recognise, protect and enhance the features of Waipa that make the district a special place
  • Set a pattern for the future growth of settlements
  • Integrate growth with infrastructure provision for a more cost effective approach to development

District Growth Strategy review

Whats the story.JPG

By 2050, we're expecting an additional 25,000 people in Waipa, bringing our popultation to nearly 75,000. That's 14,000 more people for Cambridge, 5,400 in Te Awamutu and Kihikihi and more than 6,000 additional residents spread around the rest of the district.

In May 2017 we consulted with the community about making changes to our 2009 District Growth Strategy to cater for this rapid growth.

We developed a website, held community open days and produced a hardcopy booklet to show what this growth could mean for different parts of our district.

View the 'What's the story on growth?' booklet to see possible changes to your area.

We're currently reviewing all the feedback before presenting a final plan to Council and the community.
