Waipa already has a number of key cycling and walking trails. In 2015, the community indicated it strongly supported further investment in cycleways and walkways. Council adopted a strategic framework to guide ongoing investment in trails – the focus for the 2016/17 financial year is on the western side of the district (Te Awamutu, Kihikihi and Pirongia).

The first section to get underway is the Te Awamutu to Kihikihi trail.

What is confirmed

A new 4.5km trail is being built from Te Awamutu’s Albert Park Drive to Herbert Street in Kihikihi where signage will direct users to the Kihikihi Domain and town centre.

The trail will be 2.5m wide and will be concrete in urban areas and crushed limestone in rural areas.

Other supporting works, such as drainage, fencing, landscape planting and construction of a wooden footbridge are also part of the works

Work started on Friday 9 June. The project is being completed by DNS Civil Group Ltd.

The estimated cost is $600,000. This spend is part of $1.25 million allocated this financial year for cycleways and walkways linking Te Awamutu with Kihikihi and Pirongia.
