Food waste

Food waste

A lot of what we throw in the bin doesn’t belong there. We opened up Waipa rubbish bags and found 26% of our rubbish was food waste. That’s 2.4kg a week for every house in the district!

Worm farming

A worm farm is a great way you can deal with your food waste at home and create rich compost for your garden.

Benefits of your worm farm:

  • Quick and easy to deal with your food waste.
  • Lightens your rubbish bag - money saver.
  • Creates natural fertiliser for free.
  • Stops methane gas production by taking out your food from landfill.
  • Small in size, suitable for even small gardens.

Love Food Hate Waste

Food waste is a massive problem in New Zealand. Every year Kiwis send 122,547 tonnes of food to landfill, all of which could have been eaten. Not only is wasting food costing us money, it is also bad for the environment.

Waipa District Council supports the Love Food Hate Waste programme which provides lots of handy tips and recipes to help you reduce your food waste and save money.
